Sydney's inner-western suburb is called Glebe. The neighbourhood of Glebe, which is a component of the City of Sydney's local government area and is situated 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) southwest of the Sydney CBD, is known as the Inner West. Blackwattle Bay and Rozelle Bay, two inlets of Sydney Harbour, encircle Glebe to the north. To the east is the suburb of Ultimo, and to the west are the communities of Annandale and Forest Lodge. Parramatta Road and Broadway define the southern boundary. The neighbourhood of Broadway is situated along the same-named street that divides Glebe, Chippendale, and Ultimo. Glebe's name is derived from the fact that the land on which it was developed was a glebe, originally owned by the Anglican Church. 'The Glebe' was a land grant of 162 hectares (400 acres) given by Governor Arthur Phillip to Reverend Richard Johnson, Chaplain of the First Fleet, in 1790. In the 19th century, Glebe was home to architect, Edmund Blacket, who had migrated from England. Blacket built his family home, Bidura, on Glebe Point Road in 1858, designing it along conventional Victorian Regency lines. He also designed St John's Church, on the corner of Glebe Point Road and St Johns Road. The church was built from 1868 to 1870. A first-grade football team in the New South Wales Rugby League, which is now the National Rugby League, was based in the neighbourhood of Glebe. The Glebe Dirty Reds, who played their home games at Wentworth Park, were established in 1908 and participated in the inaugural Australian rugby league seasons. The founding club was disqualified from the league in 1930 because it failed to capture a premiership. Feminist activists established the Elsie Refuge, Australia's first women's shelter, in the 1970s after occupying an abandoned terrace house. Commercial areas, restaurants and cafés The primary thoroughfare through the area is Glebe Point Road, which has a shopping strip with specialised stores, cafés, and a range of ethnic restaurants that cater to Indian, Thai, Italian, Nepalese, Dutch-Indonesian, and other minority ethnic preferences. On the iconic location of the former Grace Brothers department store, the Broadway Shopping Center was erected. The shopping centre underwent restoration in July 2007 to add a fourth storey, as well as a food court and movie theatre complex. On Saturdays, Glebe hosts a well-attended market in the grounds of Glebe Primary School. Items on sale include clothing, food, and crafts. They are referred to as alternative markets for the offered alternative lifestyle commodities. There are both new and used things for sale. Glebe is the name of a suburb in western Sydney. The City of Sydney is in charge of the Inner West district of Glebe, which is three kilometers from Sydney’s CBD. Sport and recreation Wentworth Park, which features a greyhound racing track, is on the border with Ultimo. Glebe mini skateboarding ramp is located in Bicentennial Park off Chapman road, in between Glebe and Annandale. The mini was originally 3.5-foot (1.1 m) tall with a hump in the middle. Circa 2005 the original mini was removed and replaced with a traditional 4-foot (1.2 m) ramp, sans hump. Balmain South Sydney Cricket Club play at Jubilee Oval in Glebe. Transport Glebe and Jubilee Park, two stations on the Inner West Light Rail, are located in the neighbourhood; the trip from Glebe to Central Railway Station takes slightly under twenty minutes. Route 431 of the Transit Systems travels regularly from Martin Place to Glebe Point via Elizabeth Street, Broadway, and Glebe Point Road. The 433 travels from Railway Square to Balmain via Glebe Point Road. Transdev John Holland route 370, which travels from Glebe Point to Coogee through Newtown, Alexandria, and the University of New South Wales, also provides service on Glebe Point Road. The housing stock from the 19th century has undergone restoration as a result of gentrification, but is still mostly intact. Due to its close vicinity to the Central Business District, the University of Sydney, the University of Technology Sydney, and the University of Notre Dame Australia, it is well-liked by city workers and students. Due to its proximity to the city and the pubs and cafes on Glebe Point Road, Glebe is a popular travel destination for backpackers. The Glebe Estate, a section of Housing Commission homes primarily made up of low density, reasonably priced Victorian terrace houses (similar to the nearby private homes), single cottages, and small complexes, is located at the southernmost point of the neighbourhood. It was acquired by the Gough Whitlam administration as part of a significant urban renewal project to provide public housing for the underprivileged. A high density tower block and a sizable complex are two examples of the private real estate that purchased some of the Glebe estate's homes. The third-highest Aboriginal population in Sydney is located in this region. Glebe Dirty Reds compete in the Ron Massey Cup. Glebe is surrounded to the north by Sydney Harbour inlets Blackwattle Bay and Rozelle Bay. Ultimo, a suburb, is to the east, and Annandale and Forest Lodge, two settlements, are to the west. The southern border is defined by Parramatta Road and Broadway. Along the same-named street that divides Glebe, Chippendale, and Ultimo is where the Broadway neighborhood is located.
