| A 34 hectare (84 acre) open space in Australia's New South Wales known as The Domain is a part of the City of Sydney local government region. It is located on the eastern outskirts of Sydney's financial district. The Royal Botanic Gardens Trust, a subsidiary of the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, a New South Wales government agency, is in charge of managing The Domain, a green space that surrounds the Royal Botanic Gardens and separates the CBD from Woolloomooloo. Sydney locals frequently exercise and unwind at The Domain, a popular venue for outdoor concerts, open-air events, significant political meetings, and demonstrations. Also featured are the Royal Botanic Gardens. The Domain was added on the State Heritage Register for New South Wales on April 2, 1999. Large-scale events, such Opera in the Park during the Festival of Sydney in January and Carols by Candlelight in December every year, are held in the Domain. The peninsula close to Mrs. Macquarie's Point on the eastern side of the Royal Botanic Gardens makes up the majority of the parkland. The Andrew (Boy) Charlton Pool and the Fleet Steps, which descend to the Farm Cove beach, are other features of the peninsula. A small area of property between Macquarie Street and the Botanic Gardens is also included in the parkland. The sports fields and large open areas that are used for important public events make up The Domain's primary portion. The Pavilion on the Park Restaurant, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and a kiosk may be found on its rim. Every year, the Domain plays host to a variety of significant events, most of which take place in the Summer vacation months of December and January and many of them are a part of the Sydney Festival. These significant occasions take place in the Phillip precinct, where a temporary covered stage is set up each November in preparation for the festival season. Some of the more well-known and enduring annual events that have come to be known as Sydney "traditions" include the nationally televised Carols in the Domain event, which takes place on the evening of the final Saturday before Christmas, and the Sydney Festival events Symphony in The Domain (featuring the Sydney Symphony Orchestra), Jazz in The Domain, and Opera in The Domain (featuring Opera Australia), which are all held on successive Saturday evenings in January. From 1999 to 2013, the Tropfest short film festival was hosted in the Domain every February. However, in 2013, the festival outgrew the Domain and relocated to the considerably larger Centennial Park, which is four kilometres to the southeast. In the summer, a theatre called "Open Air Cinema" runs close to Fleet Steps. The audience is placed along the beachfront and is facing the Opera House and Harbour Bridge as the cinema screen is mounted on pylons in Farm Cove. Before the movie starts, the screen is horizontally positioned above Farm Cove's water so that viewers can take in the views. It is then raised to a vertical position.
