Guardian is a trusted provider of alcohol interlock programs on behalf of state government authorities throughout Australia. Typically targeted at high-risk, serious, and repeat offenders, enrolment on the alcohol interlock program follows a disqualification period and requires an alcohol interlock device to be fitted to the offender’s vehicle by an approved Guardian Service Centre.
The alcohol interlock device prevents the offender from driving the vehicle under the influence and reports any attempted breaches to Guardian and the relevant state authority.
An alcohol interlock is an electronic breath-testing device connected to the ignition of cars, motorcycles, and heavy vehicles. Drivers must provide a breath sample that the interlock analyses for the presence of alcohol before the vehicle will start. If a positive sample is detected, the vehicle will not start. Randomly timed breath tests must also be passed during a journey. Additionally, in some states the alcohol interlock also includes a camera and takes a photograph of the person providing the breath sample to reduce the driver’s risk of circumventing the program.
The NSW Mandatory Alcohol Interlock Program (MAIP) requires designated drink drive offenders to automatically receive an interlock order from Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) advising of their requirement to complete a mandated Interlock Program. Offenders are required to install an alcohol interlock fitted with a camera for a specified period (minimum 12 months – 36 months) after their disqualification period OR they can choose to ‘sit out’ the program for a period of 5 years (from date of conviction) during which time they are disqualified from holding a licence. Participants will need to have demonstrated safe driving behaviour and the ability to separate drinking from driving before being eligible to hold a licence without an interlock condition.

The VIC Mandatory Interlock Program (VAIP) requires designated drink drive offenders to automatically receive an interlock order from VicRoads advising of their requirement to complete a mandated Interlock Program. Offenders are required to have an interlock device fitted with a camera for a minimum of 6 months following the disqualification period. Before installation offenders will be required to complete a Behaviour Change Program. At the completion of the interlock device installation you will be required to submit your completed installation certificate to VicRoads for the reissue of your licence. Participants will need to have demonstrated safe driving behaviour and the ability to separate drinking from driving before being eligible to hold a licence without an interlock condition.
