Description
Because of the growing geriatric population, introduction of minimally invasive procedures, and surging prevalence of chronic and skin diseases, the number of surgical procedures has risen significantly across the globe. Since older people are more susceptible to diseases, they often require surgical intervention in order to treat the disease. A number of diseases as well cannot be treated with just medicines and surgery is needed for effectively tackling the disease. Due to this growing need for surgical procedures, the prevalence of surgical site infections (SSI) has increased considerably as well. SSIs are infections that occur up to 30 after a surgical procedure and affect either deep tissue or the incision at the operation site.

Several products are needed for curbing surgical site infections, including wound irrigation products, antibiotic prophylaxis products, clippers, antiseptics & disinfectants, wound care supplementary products, wound care dressings, patient-warming products, surgical drapes, and surgical staff clothing. Among these, the demand for antibiotic prophylaxis was the highest in the past, as these products are utilized most commonly as preventive measures by healthcare facilities for avoiding contamination and infection during the course of a treatment. Other than this, the demand for antiseptic and disinfectant products is also projected to grow significantly in the years to come.

These products are utilized during different phases of a treatment, including intraoperative phase, postoperative phase, and preoperative phase. The demand for different products to prevent infection was the highest for intraoperative phase in 2017, which is because of the fact that the chances of infection to open wounds is high. Due to this, the adherence of healthcare professionals to infection-control guidelines which are laid down by the World Health Organization is high. Clinics, hospitals, and ambulatory surgery centers are the major end users of different products that are used for preventing SSIs.

On the basis of product, the surgical site infection market is categorized into antibiotic prophylaxis products, antiseptics and disinfectants, wound care dressings, surgical drapes, surgical staff clothing, patient-warming products, wound care supplementary products, clippers, wound irrigation products, and others. In 2017, antibiotic prophylaxis products generated revenue of $761.1 million, accounting for 18.8% share in the market. Antibiotic prophylaxis products are the most common form of preventive measure that healthcare facilities adopt to avoid infection and contamination during the course of treatment.

The surgical site infection market is also classified into intraoperative, preoperative, and postoperative phases. In terms of value, the intraoperative phase was the largest category in the market, with 40.8% contribution, in 2017. This can be attributed to factors such as the high volume of products consumed to mitigate the chances of infection during this phase and the adherence of healthcare professionals to infection-control guidelines laid down by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Hospitals made the most use of these products, which is owing to the rising number of surgical procedures and increasing number of hospitals across the globe. Geographically, North America was the largest surgical site infection market in the past because of the highly developed healthcare industry, rising awareness regarding these infections, and presence of major SSI product manufacturers in the region. Furthermore, the demand for different SSI products is also projected to rise in the Asia-Pacific region, attributed to the increasing adoption of technologically advanced products and rising geriatric population.

Hence, the demand for SSI products is growing due to the increasing number of surgeries.
