National Girl Child Day was initiated by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2008 to spread awareness about the disparities faced by the girl child across the nation. According to the fifth issue of the National Family Health Survey (2019-21), issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, “the sex ratio of the population (females per 1000 males) for the country was estimated as 1020.” Despite an increase in these numbers in the past few years, the nation still sees nearly 21% of girls dropping out of school for multiple reasons.

To provide support for girl children across the nation, various NGOs stand up for the same. One such rural development NGO is the Centre For Transforming India (CFTI), a registered organisation under the Indian Trusts Act of 1882.

The history behind CFTI:

As mentioned previously, CFTI is a registered organisation established in 2009. Headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, they have provided support, humanitarian relief and required assistance for various causes in rural Maharashtra and Assam to name a few. Some of the projects undertaken by CFTI, a rural development NGO to help the underprivileged have been in the sectors of women empowerment, skills development, girls' education, healthcare, disaster management, and water conservation. Targeting the 21% of underprivileged girls who drop out of school, CFTI has contributed majorly to helping the needy in eradicating the below-mentioned reasons.

1. Financial Situation: Hailing from rural communities, education is an expensive deal. Despite being a fundamental right for all, not many can afford it. With the aim to provide financial support, CFTI has provided school kits and scholarships to support education.
2. Distance: Government and private schools are often situated near cities and make it difficult for students in rural villages to travel and attend school. CFTI volunteers observed girls of tender ages travelling for up to 4-5 km daily through tumultuous routes and dangerous paths at unsafe hours of the day. This has been a worry for many parents and hence they pull their children out of school with the hopes to keep them safe. CFTI has distributed 15,000+ bicycles to girl children and helped them travel safely to their schools and colleges.
3. Unsafe campuses: Many schools amidst rural villages have been reported to be out of date, lacking basic infrastructure and have few to no bathrooms. Observing the distress villagers were in, CFTI supported revamping school infrastructure. Apart from this, they have also donated computers for school labs.
