Introduction to Chinese Language

Each student leads a weekly recitation section as part of a lecture course, under supervision from their instructor. Responsibilities may include providing material for discussion and helping with practice sessions.

Designed to develop the four language skills of students, with particular attention paid to speaking and writing. Students will use authentic materials (essays, dialogues, business cases and newspaper articles) from China in order to gain an understanding of its general economic and business environment as well as develop their abilities to express themselves using Chinese.

Introduce students to readings in classical Chinese in order to familiarize them with ancient China culture. Through classroom discussions, students will increase their ability to comprehend literary Chinese as well as make grammatical assumptions and judgments in this difficult language.

Students seeking an academic or professional career that requires effective Chinese communication may benefit from taking this intensive, graded study of pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and composition in Chinese. It is tailored for learners of varying proficiency levels (including heritage learners). Furthermore, an emphasis is placed on standard pronunciation throughout this class.

Chinese Characters

Chinese stands out from other alphabetic languages with its complex character system of written characters that express artistically the language's wealth of history and culture. By learning its characters, one can access all its riches.

This course aims to build proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing for Mandarin Chinese while expanding socio-cultural awareness. Specifically designed for those with at least intermediate-level conversational Chinese proficiency as well as over 1500 characters vocabulary and basic knowledge of Mandarin Chinese grammar.

Students are introduced to the syntax and grammatical structure of classical Chinese through close readings of authentic texts; typically historically significant canon texts that are highly significant for classical Chinese culture. Furthermore, this course introduces students to formal structures of classical poetry in China as well as how these works have been utilized throughout history - thus fulfilling the Foreign Language requirement successfully.

Chinese Grammar

Chinese grammar is integral for beginning or advanced learners alike, serving as its core. But to get the best experience of it, Chinese grammar should only be learned once you have established some vocabulary and listening/speaking abilities. Furthermore, beginner learners may find many of its rules too complex or disinteresting - using an auxiliary verb such as "yao" may only help higher level learners; at lower levels it could have multiple different interpretations which requires practice of pronunciation alongside listening to native speakers to understand its use in context.

This course introduces students to fundamental grammatical concepts and patterns found in modern Chinese. Building upon what was covered in Elementary Chinese, students will also gain an appreciation of its broad cultural aspects through readings and discussions. They will complete two in-class written translations (open book), each worth 5% of their grade grade; successful completion will fulfill the Foreign Language requirement.

Chinese Vocabulary

This intermediate Chinese language class employs contemporary reading materials to strengthen your linguistic abilities. By the end of this course, students should be able to read Chinese news articles and comprehend various grammatical concepts. Furthermore, formal vocabulary will be introduced along with improving grammatical accuracy and improving spoken Chinese skills.

This class provides students with an introduction to Hanyu Pinyin, an internationally recognized system of phonetic spelling for Mandarin Chinese. Furthermore, we introduce its grammatical structure and help you transition between English and idiomatic Chinese with ease.

This course is tailored specifically for heritage students and those with uneven language abilities. It features an accelerated track, which will help accelerate your language studies more quickly. Students enrolled in this accelerated track should possess some speaking and reading ability but may lack writing abilities necessary to advance to intermediate level proficiency.

Chinese Culture

Learners in this course gain an introduction to China's unique culture by becoming acquainted with its history and role in global economy through both textbook and supplementary materials. Students also explore how culture impacts language use among Chinese people as well as how their interactions occur within this culture.

Learners engage in captivating multimedia course materials, in-class activities and homework assignments designed to build their vocabulary through multimedia course materials, in-class activities and homework assignments, acquiring basic Chinese grammar fundamentals and developing practical communication skills for both formal and informal topics using both spoken Chinese as well as writing paragraphs in idiomatic Chinese. They are introduced to basic rhetoric methods as they create two written compositions in Chinese.

For advanced level students, this course serves as a continuation of Intermediate Chinese (120a). Through reading authentic materials rich in cultural connotations and through class discussions, learners will enhance their proficiency in all four communication skills while increasing their understanding of China's business environment, enabling them to communicate more effectively in commerce and finance with native speakers. Furthermore, learners will gain more insight into culture's impactful role within language as they gain a more expansive view on global cultural identities themselves.
