The Course consists of a Text, which describes the theoretical foundation upon which its thought system is based; a Workbook for Students, containing 365 daily lessons that are designed to support the mind of the student along the lines set forth by the Text; and a Manual for Teachers, which answers some of the questions most likely to be asked by one studying the Course, and clarifies some of the terms used in the books. A Course In Miracles is a book that comprises of 650 pages of text, a 500 page workbook, 365 daily meditations and a 90 page manual for teachers. Published in 1975 it is a selfstudy course on living a spiritual way of life. Although it would seem to be Christian in language, it is more aligned with Eastern mysticism than Western religion. The Course teaches a reversal of ordinary perception in that the physical world is illusionary and the world of spirit is the only reality.

A Course In Miracles took seven years to be written by Helen Schucman (a research psychologist at Columbia University) who dictated it to her supervisor Dr William Thetford who typed it. The ‘unusual’ thing about the writing of this book was that Helen, an agnostic, was taking notes from a voice that she heard, the voice identified itself as Jesus. Helen never claimed authorship for the book and always remained resistant to its teachings.

Over the years ACIM has become a worldwide phenomena aimed at self learning through experiencing contact with your inner teacher, the Holy Spirit. Many of today’s well-known spiritual authors have studied or mention The Course in their teachings.

This is a course in miracles. It is a required course. Only the time you take it is voluntary. Free will does not mean that you can establish the curriculum. It means only that you can elect what you want to take at a given time. The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim, however, at removing the blocks to the awareness of love’s presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite.
