The first month of the Islamic calendar is Muharram, also known as Muharram ul Haram. One of the four holy months of the year, when fighting is prohibited. After Ramadan, it is regarded as the second-holiest month. Ashura is observed on the tenth day of Muharram. Shi’a Muslims remember the tragedy of Ḥusayn ibn ʿAlī’s family as part of the mourning of Muharram, as it is more often known.

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them…(Qur’an; 9:36)

Ibn Katheer (rh) explains this verse by saying, Allah has chosen elites from His creation: from the angels He chose Messengers, from mankind He chose Messengers, from speech He chose remembrance of Him (dhikr), from places on Earth He chose the mosques, from months He chose Ramadan and the sacred months.

Why is Muharram so vital in Islam?

In Islam, it is very vital to abide by some of the definite rituals which can bring them closer to the Almighty Allah (SWT) and also enable Muslims to follow the religious norms respectively. Muharram is one of the four holy months of Islam, but it is also much more than that. This month, which is known as “the month of Allah” has a unique day that commemorates Muharram’s most well-known significance. The Day of Ashura, which falls on the tenth of Muharram, was the day on which fasting was required before Ramadan fasting was made mandatory.

What are the top virtues of Muharram which you need to know

Here is the list of the top virtues that you do need to follow of Muharram, that are-                      

  • Virtue 1: Ashura occurs during the month of Muharram: In Islam, it is also true that the month of Ashura is considered very Holy due to the fact that it has some of the effective historical significances. It has been illustrated by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)in his Hadith,

    “The year is twelve months of which four are sacred, the three consecutive months of Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram, and Rajab Mudar which comes between Jumadah and Sha’ban.” (Sahih Al Bukhari)

Hence it has been highlighted by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ that anyone who performs fasting during this time of the month and also commits himself into the hands of the Almighty Allah (SWT) shall receive good rewards and also lead a happy and blissful life.

Virtue 2: On this day, Allah(SWT) had saved the People of Israel: According to Islamic history, the 10th of Muharram was the day when Allah (SWT) miraculously saved Prophet Musa (RA) and his followers from the army of the cruel Pharaoh. It is said that while escaping from the evil Pharaoh (Pheroin) and his army Prophet Musa (RA) and his followers came to a dead-end at the Red sea. With nowhere to go, Prophet Musa (RA) and his followers lost their hope and prayed to Allah (SWT) for help.
